Hi guys and welcome back to my channel, Blue Nose Trading. My name is Tori Solis, and today I'm going to be doing a series review of the work that I made while I was in my spring semester 2022 at the Dallas College Richland campus.
This is only part 1 of this series because, funny story, I have a lot of work that is still up at the Dallas College that needs to go into the reduction kiln. The only problem is that we couldn't fire the reduction kiln this semester because a family of geese decided to make their whole home, and raise their whole goose family outside on the vent of the reduction kiln. We all collectively agreed that we would not fire the kiln and kill a whole family of geese. So I won't be able to do the part 2 of this series, which will be all of my reduction work, until later. Until, the geese have moved on. So for now, this is part 1 of 2 for my spring semester 2022 at the Dallas College in my ceramics 1 class. I will go ahead and start at the beginning of the semester and work my way forward.
The first project we had to do is the first project that everyone has to do, which is pinch pots. I made 3 of em, they're fine. They are all planters. I don't think pinching is for me, but it's a good skill to have. So, pinch pots, we made em.
The second project we had to do was these slab building, folding origami, slabs. I made these, which I also don't love. The glaze on these is temmoku. Except this one, this was like VC Matte over best blue or something, and it crawled terribly. Bad. Trash. The last one is just another temmoku. I think this one had gloss white over it. Meh.
The rest of the work is all wheel thrown, which is much better. This is a plate. I made a plate. I was like, "can I make a plate?" I forgot what the name of this glaze is, but it's something by Mayco. Yeah, I forgot, sorry. A classmate let me use it. (Mayco Galaxy)
This one is floating blue over oops black, and it did not do what I thought it was going to do. This is floating blue over temmoku, and it's awesome. I actually, this was a coil built pot. So I made this with coils.
This is B-mix. It's a very large bonsai planter. It's Carmen's turquoise over waxwing brown, and it just didn't really come out. B-mix favors pastels and I don't favor pastels, so I didn't love it.
This was floating blue over Bailey's red on a weird, sort of more organic rimmed pot.
This was art deco over some sort of shino that a classmate had. These are both Mayco glazes (they are not). (Amaco Art Deco Green over Amaco Acai Gloss)
This one is mocha loca with some sort of Mayco glaze inside the grooves, and gloss white on the inside. (Mayco Cenote) I had a classmate who had SO many Mayco glazes, and she was kind enough to share them with me. I don't remember all the ones. We just kind of had a free for all on glazing day, sorry.
This one is winter wood of course, over mocha loca. This one's fantastic. (Mayco Winter Wood)
This is mocha loca, and accidentally dropped this one in mino white. I literally dropped it in the bucket and then had to go find tongs and pull it out. So the glaze is super thick, and it looks a lot like a toasted marshmallow. Yeah, don't drop your pieces in the glaze bucket, not a good idea.
This one is, what is that. I'm pretty sure it's ocean over gloss white. Pretty nice.
This big boy here is ocean and then there's mino white on the inside, and gloss black on the outside. It's fine.
This one, right here, is why I don't like B-mix. It's pastel, it's Carmen's turquoise with oatmeal on top. And it just decided to crack for no reason. It cracked in the glaze, not even in the bisque. Such a MEH, with B-mix and it's cracking. It doesn't like to have any kind of unevenness to it. I don't wanna go there. I know a lot of you love B-mix, and that's fine. I don't. But I will continue to make B-mix test tiles for all of you out there.
This is part one of this series. I'm going to give a lot of this stuff away. I don't... There's a few keepers, but for the most part, it's mehh. I will be back eventually at some point with a part 2 to the spring semester at the Dallas College. Which will be all of my work that was fired in the gas reduction kiln. If you'd like to see a weekly art video, you can subscribe to my channel, Blue Nose Trading.
