Dragon Bonsai Sculpture Process | Learning Pottery Vlog | Ep 15

Hi guys and welcome back to my channel, Blue Nose Trading. My name is Tori Solis, and today I'm going to be sculpting another dragon onto a pot. The pot that I have today has a little bit of chatter on it, so, it's got it's own little texture going on.

I'm rolling out a really long dragon. I want him to have s curves in him. A longer neck than the past few have had, and a really long body. He is mostly sitting on top of the pot, rather than holding onto it on the sides as much. So there is a lot more of him up above the pot, and he's really tall and it's been a challenge to find the center of gravity that holds him up. I did tilt him slightly so he's kind of looking forward at an angle, and that helped with balancing him up there to where he was self-sustaining.

Now I'm going to put teeth in his mouth. I've been making the jaw, the upper jaw and the bottom jaw, separate. I've been putting the teeth in first before I make the connection, and also, I've been painting the inside with an underglaze of crimson. I'm trying to paint it on pretty thick because this is technically wet clay that I am painting on, so it's not ideal. But, it's almost impossible to paint inside of his mouth after the jaw has been attached. I'm hoping this is going to at least give an impression of a different, more natural kind of color on the inside of his mouth when he is done.

I'm working on his head piece. For this one, I'm going to do the dangerous spikes that are not friendly for the postal services. I don't know if I will ever figure out a way that I can send these, but I know for sure that I'm going to keep making them because I really love when the spikes are nice and delicate.

I went ahead and drew a line down his back to organize where I want the spikes before I start making and attaching them. I make them one at a time, and I attach them one at a time. As I'm attaching them, it's really important that I'm making sure they are exactly how I want them. Because they start drying really really fast, and if I don't immediately shape them and bend them into the right shape and direction that they are going to go, it's really easy to break them off later because they become so fragile and brittle so quickly.

I take my time, I've actually pushed this up to 75x speed as I attach the spikes, so you don't have to sit here forever. If you want to sit here forever, and you want to see this entire process done at 1.35x speed, you can join my Patreon at bluenosetrading. You will get access to my sculpting videos in real time, which can be several hours long sometimes. These are the condensed versions (on YouTube). There's lots of other cool benefits on my Patreon too, but just, keeping it relevant. You can find the link for that below.

I'm going to go ahead and keep attaching spikes to this guy. He's got that long body and he's holding himself up really well, which is nice. I like it when it doesn't take too much to keep them standing up. I do have some pieces of foam, but it's just better if they stand up on their own from the get-go. Almost done with the spikes, takes a very long time to get them all just so.

After I finish attaching all the spikes, I'm going to start on sculpting his hands and his feet. So I'll start with the arms and just get the base of them and then shape them out and blend them into his body. One on each side. Thinking about how he is going to hold this pot. Then I'm going to make his little fingers, and attach them to his little hands. This one has a hand that is sticking up out in the air, because I was like, what if he was *extra breakable*, wouldn't that be cool? So, he's got a hand sticking out in the air to make him extra breakable. This other hand is attached to the side of the pot which is more stable.

I am going to make both of his feet pretty stable. They are going to be attached and clinging to the sides. Because I mean, if you look at how he is sitting on there, he's kind of resting his body so his arms kind of holding him up on one side. But on the back there, his tail's kind of falling off so he's really going to have to have a grip with his legs to hold himself onto this pot. I take all of that into consideration when I am putting his feet on, and decide how the nails, hands and fingers are going to hold onto this pot. I consider the rest of his body and what it is doing.

I really like, love these types of spikes. Just love it. I love the effect that comes out of them. I'm going to make a lot of different kinds of spikes, because like I said, these are so fragile. Unreal fragile. Fine art fragile.

Now that I have his hands and feetsies all done, I'm going to add his slip scales. Which are basically just a texture that I do with slip and my tool across his back. I just apply this everywhere. His underside, you know, his softer underside isn't going to have this scaling obviously. Just the backside, the armored part of him.
