Hi guys and welcome back to my channel, Blue Nose Trading. My name is Tori Solis, and today I'm going to be making glazes from scratch. These are the glazes that I thought that I was going to make, but that's not actually what happened. I made some of these.
For all my astrology peeps, I made this video during the last Mercury retrograde, and I'll tell you what, retrograde retrograded all over this video. When I started this video, the GoPro died, like straight up, it's dead all the way, it has the lines of death on the screen, and it no longer works. Then in the middle of making this video I realized that I was out.... well, I wasn't out of, I never ordered any zinc. So a few of the glazes that I was going to make had zinc in them, and I couldn't make them, so they got put off to the side. Then I had to make this video on my phone, and my phone died halfway through. The scale's battery died twice while I was trying to do this. It was just, an event.
This is not a "how to make glaze" video. This is the vlog version of my first attempt making glaze. I had a little bit of trial and error while I was working through this video because the first time you do anything there is at least a little bit of trial and error. I learned that when you're adding materials to water, you want to be stirring them in-between each material or they will still form a giant cake that is incredibly hard to stir without going in there with your hands. So stir in-between the additions of the chemicals.
Then, the CMC gum. I tried a few different ways to add it. I added it to the jar itself. I tried adding it to the bucket while I was mixing. I definitely recommend adding it to the jar and stirring it up if you're going to be using the CMC gum. I also did like 1 tsp for the whole container. The original recipe that I found said to use 1tsp for every half cup, and that turned my glazes into yogurt. I don't think that you need that much, but hey, it's all up to you.
I still need to test the specific gravity of these. I never did that. That's on the to-do list. The tool to do that is in the mail. I needed a graduated cylinder, so I ordered on, and it's coming. These glaze videos will eventually be more improved and more organized, but this is the first time making the glazes.
I did make quiet a few glazes and low and behold, the retrograde hit my firing as well. My test tiles that were in my bisque kiln fired to about cone 01, because the kiln overdid itself. Then whenever I did the glaze fire, I fired test tiles for these, and I also fired the pots from that mystery clay series. The glaze fire went to about cone 8.
Here are all of the tiles. I have tiles for b-mix, Trinity spectacular, and for Trinity loca mocha. Which is a speckled clay, b-mix is b-mix, and loca mocha is a dark clay body. These are the glazes that I made and how they turned out on these tiles. I will have more of this coming in the future. Go ahead and subscribe to this channel if you'd like to see more. You can find me on Patreon if you want to see everything early. I will see you guys next week with another art video.
