Hi guys and welcome back to my channel, Blue Nose Trading. Today it's going to be a really quick video because I'm just going to show you how to roll a slab using these bamboo rods instead of a slab roller. It's super easy. So I've got these bamboo rods. There's two of each one and they each are a different thickness, so you can determine what thickness you want to get your slab. Then I have a metal (stainless steel) rolling pin. Basically we are going to just use this and this and some clay, and we are going to roll a slab really quick.
This first thing I want to do here is wedge this clay out a little bit because it is recycled clay so it has some air bubbles in it. I'm just trying to reduce those as much as possible. I'm going to smooth out the cracks that I made from wedging. I'm going to slap it into shape. I'm going to throw it down a couple of times to help compress the clay and also reduce air bubbles. I smooth out the cracks as I go. Then line it up horizontally to my bamboo sizing... measurement... devices.
They are just pieces of bamboo that are cut to a specific thickness so that when you're rolling your slab out, you're getting the right thickness that you want every time. This works basically by keeping the side of the rolling pin on the bamboo, which prevents you from pushing down too far as you're going. You still want to try to roll out nice and smooth and even, or you're going to end up with edges that are a little bit thinner on the ends where you're rolling. You still do want to take your time and make sure that you're pressing evenly across the clay body. Sometimes I put my whole body into rolling it to make sure that I got it nice and even. I really like this rolling pin, and I will put a link to this rolling pin and these bamboo spacers below.
So when you're flipping this slab, you want to make sure that you aren't bending it too much. Honestly, if you could flip it, like transfer it from one solid surface to the next, that would be better than what I did here. Because the clay does have a bit of a memory and if you're bending it too much you're going to be disaligning the clay particles, and it will remember that it bent, and sometimes this can lead to cracking later.
So here you have it, a hand rolled slab. I didn't need a fancy slab roller to get it done. You can find links to all the tools that I used here below.
Thanks for joining me this week as I showed you guys a quick, easy way to roll out a slab. Just in case you don't have a big, expensive, fancy slab roller and you have to do it with a rolling pin by hand. If you found this video helpful please give it a thumbs up, and if you'd like to see a weekly art video you can subscribe to this channel, Blue Nose Trading and I will see you next week at 5:30 (CST).
