How to upcycle your old glass jars for organizing art supplies in your art studio or pottery studio. Easy storage solutions that also reduce waste. Use these repurposed glass jars to hold your pottery stains, chemicals, or any art supplies and what nots. Save jars to recycle and turn them into easy art organization! Directions and supplies list below!
SUPPLIES LIST:
► Glass jars. (from spaghetti sauce, salsa, jelly, whatever you have around. I personally really prefer jars that stack easily onto each other.)
► Spray paint, any color you like.
► **Mask (for when you are working with spray paint, or any chemicals you might want to store in your jars)
►Work surface prepared for paint. (I cover my workbench in newspaper. Definitely do this outside, spray paint is NOT an inside tool.)
► Rubbing alcohol (to remove and "best by" stamps on the jars)
► Packing tape (for making labels on your jars, but you can label them any way you want. I find that covering the label in clear packing tape helps with strength and water resistance.)
► Scissors (Always handy to have around. I use them for trimming up the tape. I also have scissors who are dedicated to tape, because no one likes sticky scissors, so that's an extra pro-tip.)
DIRECTIONS:
1. Wash your jars and remove the tags and labels.
2. Let them sit with baking soda in them until the smell of whatever they previously held is gone. (Optional, usually takes 3-6 weeks if they had something spicy in them.)
3. Use rubbing alcohol to remove any "best by" dates or stamps on the jars.
4. Ensure the lids are clean and dry, remove them from the jars and lay them out on your work surface.
5. Shake your spray paint well, test that it is working properly on a safe surface.
6. Moving your hand back and forth, evenly apply the first coat of spray paint. Be sure to come from all sides, do not worry if the original lid design is not yet fully covered at this point.
7. After the first coat of paint has dried, repeat the process to add a second coat.
8. Apply a third coat if needed, this will depend a lot on the color and type of spray paint, as well as your personal preferences.
9. When the spray paint is fully dried you are ready to put your fancy new lids onto your jars.
10. Fill your jars with whatever you want, and label them in your own unique style. (I like to use the original packaging and clear packing tape as a label when it is possible.)
11. Feel awesome about yourself for upcycling and recycling glass jars that might have otherwise been wasted.
