Liopleurodon Pot Sculpture Process | Learning Pottery Vlog | Ep 16

Hi guys and welcome back to my channel, Blue Nose Trading. My name is Tori Solis and today I'm going to be sculpting a liopleurodon onto one of my wheel thrown pots. A magical liopleurodon who may or may not be able to tell you how to get straight to candy mountain.

So the first thing I did was make his body. Then I'm going to slip and score his body, and slip and score the pot, so that I can make sure that he has a good connection to the pot.

I'm going to use my sculpting tool now to create the teeth for his mouth. With this one, I'm going to make him have a lot of tiny teeth. Because he would be a fish eating kind of animal and fish eating animals tend to have small teeth so they can bite down on the fish and pull it back into their mouth without it escaping. I mean, there's always exceptions to this rule, but that's how his teeth are, and that's why.

Making teeth or spikes is always the longest part of this process. It's always the longest part of the video. Each one is carefully sculpted by hand in my hands while keeping my fingers kind of wet to prevent them from drying out the tiny tiny pieces of clay super fast. Then they are dipped into a tiny bit of slip, and I use my sculpting tool to create a smooth bond between the teeth and the jaw.

Once I have his upper teeth all set into his jaw, I'm going to being sculpting out the bottom jaw. I'm also going to attach teeth and a tongue into the bottom jaw. Again, I'm making these pieces one at a time, working very carefully, making sure they are nice and secure.

One thing I am doing differently in this entire set that I have been working on, is painting underglaze onto the wet clay. It's not the most ideal situation because the clay is wet and it's not really wanting to absorb anything extra. I'm going to see how it works out because once the jaw has been attached to the head, it's almost impossible to get in there with any kind of paint or glaze. So the best time to add this color is while the pieces are detached. I'm just going to go ahead and try it out.

I am attaching the jaw now. I'm going to blend the sides to make a nice smooth transition. I did have a (wet) paper towel over him while I was working to keep his back moist.

Now it is time to make his flippy floppers. I'm going to sculpt out the flippers and see what kind of shape I want to have them. Once I have one made, I'm going to use it as a template to make the other three. I sculpt each of the flipper by hand, at least the rough shape of them, I can trim them down a little bit later to make them match the point on his body where I'm going to want them to go. I'm testing how I want them to sit on the pot. Once I have decided on how I want them there, I will slip and score them to his body, and smooth them in. I might not even have slipped and scored here because they clays are both the same level of wetness. So now I'm attaching his back flippers as well.

He was a pretty easy build, honestly. I mean, I thought about giving him more details and spikes, but he's an underwater animal that would be better off being smooth and streamlined.

I'm going to go in and smooth out any fingernail nicks, or places where I scored and didn't get covered, any additional slip that came out of the sides of the seams, and do some detailing on his face, give him some eyes. Refine the details, and after all of that, he's going to be pretty much done.
