How I set up my desk for sculpting ceramic clay

Hi guys and welcome back to my channel, Blue Nose Trading. My name is Tori Solis, and today, I'm going to show you how I set up desk to work on a sculpture. So let's get to it.

Let's do a quick tour of how I set up my work space to sculpt. For starters, I have a wet microfiber towel on top of a piece of HardieBacker. The HardieBacker is mold resistant and the microfiber towel is a nice place to set the slabs and pieces of clay scraps that I'm working with to keep them moist. I have a nice wet sponge sitting on top of my wet area, so that I can wipe my tools off, sometimes I just need to use a sponge. They are good to have around. I have the red rubber rib by MudTools. This is the softest rib that they make, and it's good for smoothing and other sculptural things, and I like to keep it over here. I have my stainless steel rolling pin which I use to roll out slabs. I have these bamboo thickness strips, basically they measure the slabs so that when you roll it out, you get it even, so, pieces of bamboo. I have the clay that I am going to be working with. Eventually we will use these to make a slab to work on. I have a piece of foam egg crate here, so that if I need to pick up a piece and set it down in a weird way on top of the sculptural work, it doesn't get messed up. I have some of the tools I know I'm going to use. If I pull anymore tools they will go in here. Inside of the tool jar I have wet paper towels. The reason I like wet paper towels is because when you stick your tools down in there, it gives them something to sit on were the clay doesn't get super dry on them, and you can also wipe them in that wet paper towel to get and kind of chunks off to have a pretty clean tool to work with. I have a general purpose glass of water (not for drinking). Sometimes I dip my fingers in it, sometimes I use it to re-wet things, it's just good to have a glass of water around when you're working. I have the score tool and I have my jar of slip for the clay that I'm working with today, which is Laguna Speckled Buff. I have my toolbox full of any other tools that might need while I'm working. I have a carving kit that has a lot of specialty tools for sculpture work. I have a piece of silicone pad sitting over a piece of HardieBacker. Again, this just kind of makes the surface smooth and also water resistant, because I'm going to roll a slab over here. Then I have my Shimpo banding wheel, with a pot that I threw a day or two ago ready to have sculptural work attached to it. So this is how I set up my space, and I hope you found this helpful, maybe a few tips to help you in setting up your space. One of the main things is to keep tools that you are going to grab and use frequently close to your hands. The less you're moving your hands around, and the less you're trying to think about "where did I leave my tool?", the better off you're going to be.
