Painting Underglaze onto Dragon Sculpture "Chainsaw" | Mayco Fundamentals | Ceramic Artwork| Ep. 25

Hi guys and welcome back to my channel, Blue Nose Trading. My name is Tori Solis, and today I'm going to be painting a coat of underglaze onto one of my dragon sculptures from a previous video, "Chainsaw". I am going to be giving him a coat of overglaze once I get him back to the studio, but for right now, we are just going to get his base colors down with some underglaze, so let's get to it.

I was finally able to get Chainsaw bisque fired at the Dallas Creative Arts Center. I'm currently moving some work through the Creative Arts Center, as well as taking a throwing class there so I can get better at throwing form, and also get some of my work finished while I continue to work on my own kiln at home. I have made a lot of progress on that front. If you saw one of my last videos, we did finish building the kiln shed and we got the kiln sitter replaced, and just today actually, I started repairs on the kiln floor. I will have a video for that coming out in a few weeks, but for right now, I'm firing at the Dallas Creative Arts Center.

Chainsaw managed to make it through his bisque without losing any of his parts at all. Every single spike is intact, and I was super happy about that. No cracks, no breaks, no explosions, so that was really lucky and we were blessed by the kiln gods on that front.

I wasn't particularly attached to what color I was going to paint this dragon. So I called my grandpa, and I was like, "Grandpa, what color should I paint this dragon?" and he told me that it, "should be purple", so Chainsaw is going to be purple. I'm applying three layers of these Mayco Fundamentals underglazes. 'Pansy purple' is going to be the base color for this dragon.

I am wearing these terrible, Christmas, stained, red gloves while I'm handling my bisque wear because I don't want to get the oils from my hands on the bisque, it can cause glazing issues later, and I am going to be putting glaze over this underglaze once I get back to the Creative Arts Center. I think I need to get some gloves that are the correct color for my brand to go in these videos, because these red ones are a bit of an eye-sore. Bear with me for a couple of videos until we get new gloves.

I am going to be making my own glazes in the future. I've been reading a lot, and studying a lot, and collecting materials to get that rolling. I'd say the next step for me is going to be making a thousand test tiles. So there will be lots of videos upcoming from me making and testing glazes. But for the moment in time that we are at right now, I am going to be using the glazes at the Creative Arts Center to finish up this pieces. I don't really know exactly which glazes I'm going to use to finish this piece. I don't ever really have a plan, I'm just going to get there and see what I think will work out and give it a go.

For Chainsaw's spikes, I ended up going with "Marine Blue", and "Red Coral" for the accents on the tops of the spikes. It took a long time to get enough coats on here. I'm doing 3 coats of each one because I haven't done any test tiles, and I'm just winging it on this piece. This dragon is going to be a gift, so I'm not incredibly worried about it. So he is just one big, sculptural test tile.

At some point, I hope to get to where I am making sculptures and dragons that I might be willing to allow to leave my house and go home with other people. I'm not really sure when that's going to be, because right now I just want to keep all of them.

This is a final look at Chainsaw and his underglaze before he gets his overglaze and goes into the kiln at the Dallas Creative Arts Center for his final firing. If you'd like to see how Chainsaw turns out, as well as my other work, you can subscribe to this channel, Blue Nose Trading. There is a new art video every Friday at 5:30 CST.
