Raku Firing at the Dallas Creative Arts Center | Trash Can Pottery | American Raku | Ep 28

Hi guys and welcome back to my channel, Blue Nose Trading. My name is Tori Solis, and today we are going to be doing a raku firing at the Dallas Creative Arts Center. I'm standing out here in front of our gas raku kiln. We are going to use this kiln to super heat our pottery, then when it's red hot, we are going to grab it and throw it into a trashcan full of combustibles to create a reduction atmosphere. In our case today it's going to be newspaper. So let's get started!

This is our glaze room. Everybody in here is getting their pieces ready for the raku firing today. We have several different low fire raku glazes to choose from. We have this silver flash raku, this low fire honey mix, opaque white crackle, a traditional white raku that crackles. The one that I am actually using is called alligator crawl. It's one of my favorites. They've got it up here. This is a sample test tile of this one. I'm putting this on one of my pots. I'm really excited to see what comes out of the kiln today.

These are the two pots that I will be putting in the raku firing. This one here on the right has the blue flash raku glaze that was pulled out of the room at the time so I didn't get to show you this one. But essentially it supposed to be a shimmery blue flashing glaze. Then this is the pot where I put the alligator raku. I did a really thick application because I want to encourage that crawling texture personally for this piece. So these are the two that I am going to be firing and I think it's about time that we loaded the up the kiln.

We are all working together here to load the kiln. My instructor Nathan is doing most of the loading and some of my classmates are helping to hand him pieces to make sure that everybody's work gets in and gets fired.

I am doing a voice over and I muted this original audio because the metal working class was so loud, and there were going so hard on their artwork that I couldn't figure out a way to keep the original audio on this clip without it being incredibly painful to listen to. But thankfully, by the time our kiln was ready to unload, they had finished with all of their artwork for the day. So we will be able to use the original audio in that portion of the clip. I feel like it will help you feel a little bit more like you're there. In the upcoming clip of the kiln itself, you can hear a roaring noise, and that is actually the sound of the gas burning into the kiln.

Dialog:

What are you poking it for?

Oh, uhm, checking the temperature really. You can see when I hold the wire by the piece you will see a reflection of the wire on the piece. That will make sure it's melted. They are all fluxed, so I check each piece to make sure they are all the same.

So, I need people to do jobs.

I want a job!

You can probably do either lid or newspaper. So you need to throw the newspaper in. There are three jobs I need. Do you want to do lids or paper?

Lids.

So then I'm going to have you throw newspaper in.

OK.

We are going to have to double up on a bunch of these cans. So in-between, you are going to put a piece down and throw new newspaper. Then we will do another one and thrown in new newspaper, throw a piece in and throw another one. Ok?

How many newspapers total?

Two, not three or four. Ok, and then I will need someone to move those cans once we are done with them. And you will probably want to switch because it will get smoky. Then I need someone to do the door and not burn me.

I can get the cans.

You can move the cans? Ok. There's a glove there, and who is going to get the door and not me? If anyone is choking or taking out take over for their job and you can bounce back and forth. Alright? Can you do the door an not burn me?

Yes.

Wait which one, like yes you will burn me, or yes you will do the door?

Well, I can't tell you. Where's the gloves?

Should be some there.

How do I do this? Oh, Ok.

All the copper ones are going to come out first, and get put together. Close it. I'm going to let this cool for a second so it doesn't flux. Put it in. Newspaper. Oh are you taking them away? Not on the grass, that one might eat the grass up, or the wood. Try it on the edge of that concrete. I'll do the best that I can on the camera thing.

You're good.

Don't step on that! That is super hot. I'm letting it cool off a little bit, because if you put it in the newspaper too quick it will get the texture. Newspaper, close that please. No wait wait.

He's going to put another in there.

So Kent will tell you when to grab it. Oh that's hot. Open the can, newspaper, more newspaper, shut it.

Ok that's ready.

So those are similar glazes so they can go together?

Right.

Ok ready?

Yup.

Oh man.

Now who else had copper? That big bowl had copper right?

I think you just pulled out alligator.

Go ahead and close it. Who had the big bowl? Oh that's yours. Anyone else have the alligator or the copper that you haven't seen come out? Oh are you alright?

I just needed air over there.

Do want me to take it Kent or no?

Go ahead, nope, nope. Put the lid back on Kent.

Son of a biscuit. That's why I hate that stupid copper. Alright, newspaper.

Ok take it away.

Now, Elizabeth if you need air, or if any of yall need air go ahead and switch out.

Unless any of you wants to go for it I don't mind doing it.

I'm totally cool with continuing.

You're doing a great job.

I just want to be in my video, so I'm just going to stay.

You're on a roll.

Close.

Now we got all the copper out. That has to come out super hot. We are going to take it down a little bit. It won't be so hot and we need to let the pieces cool down. It's slower paced. It's a little more relaxed and we should be alright.

Oh are we ready?

I just turned down the fire. The reason I turned down the fire is they get less thermal shock once they start cooling down. This one is I think one of y'alls. So now, whoever's it is, come blow on it.

I'm pretty sure it's yours.

Did you do the yellow?

So blow on it, and listen for a tink. Tink, tink, tink, tink, tink. So we will put three or four in the can. Is it tinking? Is it continuously tinking? Tink, tink, tink, tink. So let's go ahead. I'm just going to put it in the can. Do you want to blow on it?

She's like hell yeah I do.

Tink, tink, tink, tink, tink.

I can't hear it.

So keep blowing. Blow on that side as well.

Yeah I hear it.

Does it need more.

New newspaper.

One more in there right?

Yeah, at least. Ok good, we are good.

Oh god.

It's hot, keep going. You should have rocket lungs. You hear anything?

I hear a little.

You hear something?

I heard one, you want me to do it a little longer?

Look on the surface and see if there are any hairline cracks. No?

Wait I see a little, it's going now.

New newspaper, new newspaper. How many's in there?

Three in there.

Three? Ok.

Ready?

Just keep an eye on these and the lids. We are putting in so much we're adding extra oxygen in there and that can make the lids pop.

Your drip looks all kind of blended. I'm so excited.

You good?

I'm good. It's like that one sharp one in your throat you know.

So we got, we will put three in one and two in the other. Whose this?

I think it's mine.

Ooh, it's already pinging. Oh I hear it.

There it is.

It should continue, is it continuing? Ok. Blow on the outside. If you wait too long it won't ignite the paper. Come one little guy. Alright good.

You ready. How many are left?

Four, three.

I head it. You ready? We're good.

Two more left.

Don't step on that, it will go right through your shoe.

I did not see that fall on the ground, thank you. I was focusing on closing I did not see it. I didn't see it fall over here I thought you did it over there. That would not be fun. There's one right there.

I heard a few.

whew.

What you're doing is super cooling the glaze on the outside. New newspaper, there you go.

We were wondering, she just did the blue does she have to blow on it?

Just the blue, the one that was all blue.

We'll try it. I have no idea what that glaze is going to do. I haven't seen it properly fired.

Let's try blowing on it and see. I'm going to actually do the little cup first.

Whatever, I'll do it.

At least we've got a good breeze. Tink, tink, tink, tink, tink. I don't hear anything. Do you hear it? Oh there it is. Last but not least.

Ok Tori is ready.

Ready?

Hair don't catch on fire.

Oh, she moved the camera.

Is it tinking?

Yeah.

Nice! Alright.

Oh it's cracking a lot.

Oh, heard that one. Oh shit, that's bad.

Too much, too much!

New newspaper, new newspaper. Alright it's done.

Nice! Good job guys, good team!

I don't know what's what. Where's the copper? I want to take those out last.

I know this is copper. This is mine, I know that. I think these are the older ones and these are the newer ones.

oooh, ahh.

that looks cool.

Yeah metallic. It got super dark.

Is that blue?

The metallic is awesome.

Pretty.

It's really pretty.

I think there's twelve pieces in all.

Go grab gloves, and move these over there. She gave you two righties.

I'm going to put these on in case I get an urge to touch stuff.

Oh these are copper. Oh this was Megans.

It's tinking.

Oh it is? High or low?

High.

High pitched? The copper is hotter, so let's leave those for a little bit longer. Let's try another one, hopefully we get a clear.

I don't know. Do you remember which order you put these in?

Well, I think the smaller on is the first one, and then I think I did that one and went back.

Oh, awesome. You're a little bold.

It's looks really cool.

It will be whiter when you scrub it. It has tar from the newspaper on it. You scrub it with a little scotch bright pad, and it will be much whiter. I'm thinking when you scrub these they will be much whiter. Yours are blue.

Yeah that's what I said, it turned out pretty blue. Some cracks, got a big deep on right here. I don't think that mine crackled, I think we just cracked it. I mean it's got the normal raku cracks, down the top through this all the way.

Perfect.

Oh wow! It looks good!

That's cool. Looks really cool.

It will be alright. One day I'll be watering my tree and it will just fall out of the pot and I will be like, today's the day.

That was stinky, right in my eyeball.

It smells good.

That's not bad, not bad. Oh I'm still burning. Hot, hot, hot. Hot, hot, hot, hot. We only had three in some right?

Yeah.

That one's mine.

These are all the copper.

So let's give it a shot.

Take that one.

That one's still smoking.

That's the one you opened.

Oh that's why its smoking, because I reintroduced oxygen.

I just want to blow on the piece to get more cracks. I know it's too late for that.

Oh that's his, he mixed the colors. I don't know what that's going to look like.

Hey my nubbums stayed!

That looks cool! I like the texture.

Thank you that was why I put it on so thick, to his dismay. Oh my god I love it! It's like red. Is it red hot or is that just the color of it.

That's just the color, and it will change color and brighten up the longer it's out. What the hell is this?

I don't know, it doesn't look like it has glaze on it.

Oh no, who did this one.

I did that one!

What was on it?

The uh, alligator, but with water mixed into it.

Oh, it got a little too thin sorry.

That's alright.

That's the opposite effect. I put it on too thick. The only thing is that like I was telling her, these are super fragile.

Yeah, when it get's real thick it doesn't always bond.

Oh that's cool.

Oh Jesus, don't touch it. I'm on fire. That burnt through the leather gloves.

Was that copper gloss?

Yeah the copper penny.

Here's a spot for his.

You want to try?

Yeah.

You sound reluctant. I can take it out tonight if you want to wait.

It's going to be super hot.

That looks awesome.

Oh my gosh!

Wow!

That is gorgeous!

What is that? What do you do with it? What is it?

It's a thing and a what-cha-ma-call-it.

It's an object.

Oh it's art. That's fine, art is acceptable.

Two, four, six, eight, ten, twelve, thirteen, good!

Perfect.

Now let them cool. Does anybody hear any big tinking?

Just little.

Ok little is fine. Big we worry about, we would have to stick them back in to hopefully stop them.

Oh my god I love it! Are these stable?'

What do you mean?

Like do they lose their shimmer?

No they stay. At least for a couple years. Now with constant watering I don't know, but

they should.

I was just reading a thing, because I like to be the one that reads things, on digital fire that a lot of raku glazes don't have enough silica in them to stay.

The matte ones do, so that would be less stable than this glossy copper.

Which is that one?

This is that blue.

I have never seen blue, like the bright blue raku glaze before.

It's not bright blue, it looks mostly turquoise to me.

It's weird how this completely, like the middle dripped.

These are the results from todays raku firing in our class at the creative arts center. I'm not going to touch everyone's pieces because they're not mine to touch, but these are my pieces. So this was the blue raku and as you can see it reduced really well. These are not for sale because they crack and they are a little unstable. So this is just for me and this is that piece. And this was my favorite. This was the alligator crawl raku and it had some amazing texture and the colors came out pretty incredible as well for this piece. And all of my little feetsies stayed on. I still have to clean these up a little bit. Once I get them cleaned up and take the money shots, they will be featured on my shorts. So if you subscribe to the channel, you will be able to see those. Thank you for tuning in this week guys. I hope you found this video entertaining and fun. If you'd like to see a weekly art video, you can subscribe to my channel, Blue Nose Trading.
